BRASILIA, Aug 13 (Reuters) – A proposed constitutional amendment to overhaul Brazil’s tax system will be put to lawmakers in a congressional committee tasked with drafting the proposal by Oct. 8, the bill’s coordinator Aguinaldo Ribeiro said on Tuesday.
“The idea is that we (lawmakers) will draft the text which will then be put to the plenary of the lower house,” Ribeiro told a congressional committee in Brasilia. Tax reform is likely to be the government’s main economic priority in the second half of this year, after a focus on pension reform in the first half.
The Brazilian government leader in the Senate, Fernando Bezerra, expects pension reform to pass in the Senate after approval by the lower house earlier this month. Bezerra said Economy Minister Paulo Guedes will go to the Senate next Tuesday to discuss tax and pension reforms.
