Andrea Jenkyns ‘hopeful’ MPs will lodge no confidence votes

Dame Andrea Jenkyns has urged other Tory MPs to submit letters of no confidence in Rishi Sunak.

The former minister yesterday revealed she had sent her letter to the Conservative backbench 1922 Committee following the Prime Minister’s sacking of Suella Braverman which has infuriated those on the right of the party.

Asked on GB News if other MPs should follow her, the Morley and Outerwood MP said: “I hope so.

“To me, it’s bigger than just the party, we’re fighting for our country now.

“And we are fighting for not only conservatism, but we’re trying to stop the likes of Starmer getting into number 10 and cannot do that with Rishi Sunak.

“We’ve been a year now of Rishi Sunak in post and look we’re haemorrhaging votes.

“I’ve had people resign memberships from my constituency and we’ve seen it up and down the country and he’s not conservative to me.

“I don’t agree that we are just a small section of the party. If you look at the party membership, we’re more in tune with this so-called wing of the party and the general populace.”

Dame Andrea said she submitted her letter as she had “run out of patience” with Mr Sunak.

She said: “I saw some green shoots when we were rolling back on net zero which we needed to do.

“The way he treated Boris [Johnson], the un-conservative policies we’ve got coming through.

“He could have moved Suella to a different position, that’s always in the Prime Minister’s gift. But he has purged my wing of the party out of Cabinet.

“Suella was speaking for the people. I was at four Remembrance services on Sunday and I lost count of the number of people who came up to me and said she’s speaking for me with what she’s saying about the two-tier policing system.”

In her furious letter which she shared on X, formerly Twitter, Dame Andrea said “enough is enough”.

She said: “If it wasn’t bad enough that we have a party leader that the party members rejected, the polls demonstrate that the public reject him, and I am in full agreement. It is time for Rishi Sunak to go.”

Her letter comes as MPs on the right of the party are furious about the firing of Mrs Braverman as Home Secretary in the PM’s reshuffle on Monday.
