‘Don’t hit bombs’: Phil Mickelson’s mom sends worried texts to sister during PGA final round

They always say Mom knows best, no matter how old you are and even if her advice goes against your own catchphrases.

Take it from Phil Mickelson, 51, who won the PGA Championship over the weekend and became the oldest golfer to win a major.

That didn't stop his mother, Mary, from texting his sister, Tina, some final words of wisdom as Mickelson's round wound down and he clung to a lead. Mary tried to use Tina as a messenger because she knew "Lefty" wouldn't be checking his phone much — and probably wouldn't listen to her in the first place.

"Tina, (text) Philip and tell him to just par in," she texted. "Don't hit bombs or activate calves. Just par. They will have to catch him."

While you guys were busy on the golf course, I was busy fielding Mom’s “nervous texts”.😂 @[email protected]/ZyZZ5xvdRN

"Hittin' bombs" and "activate the calves" have been phrases Mickelson has used and popularized in recent years, but without much success on the golf course. He entered the major at Kiawah Island in South Carolina this weekend ranked 115th in the world.

"He won't listen to his mother," Mary wrote, "(so) you text him."

Tina responded that she would text her other brother Tim, who was caddying for Phil.

"He's the only one Phil is listening today!" she wrote.
