Maki’s character is Judith, a Japanese Canadian woman who brings her family to a self-development retreat after the recent death of her mother. When Judith and her husband Steve (Ransom‘s Luke Roberts) befriend another interracial couple who seem to have the perfect marriage, Judith begins to recognize how irreparably fractured her relationship is. When their distressed partnership begins to affect the children’s emotional security, the family is forever changed.

Also starring Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians), Sarah Gadon (Maps to the Stars), newcomer Nyha Breitkreuz and Remy Marthaller (The Island Between Tides), Seagrass is produced by Experimental Forest Films’ Tyler Hagan (Never Steady, Never Still) and Ceroma Films’ Sara Blake (Until Branches Bend). Post-TIFF, the film will continue to travel globally on the festival circuit, with theatrical release plans to be announced at a later date. Game Theory Films is handling its Canadian distribution and also oversees world sales.

A Japanese Canadian creative known for using her work to explore themes of identity and lineage, Hama-Brown also previously helmed the music video for Alaskan Tapes’ “And, We Disappear.” She’s additionally directed shorts that have featured at festivals internationally, and is in the early stages of scripting her sophomore feature.
