The CARES Act, which created extended unemployment benefits and a program for gig workers and self employed people, expires Dec. 26.
Although a bill to extend benefits for the jobless is working its way through Congress, it likely won’t be approved in time so that there’s a smooth transition between programs. Instead, there will be a gap between the end of the CARES Act and the start of whatever Congress passes. And, the governor’s moratorium on evictions is set to expire at the end of the year, further jeopardizing the lives of people already living on the financial edge.
