  • With the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, you can earn a $300 statement credit after you spend $3,000 in purchases in the first 6 months from account opening — it has an annual fee of $95 (waived the first year if you apply by 12/10/2020) (See rates).

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express and the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express are top options for earning cash back on your everyday expenses without having to shell out high annual fees.

Amex has just launched an improved bonus on the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express and it's a perfect fit if you'll do a lot of holiday shopping at Amazon.  New applicants can currently get 20% back on purchases at Amazon.com on the Card in the first 6 months, up to $200 back (plus, you can earn $100 back after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card within the first 6 months). That's a solid deal for a card with a $0 annual fee (See rates).

There's also a limited-time bonus on the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express that's still active until December 10. You'll earn a $300 statement credit after you spend $3,000 in purchases in the first 6 months from account opening, and Amex will waive the $95 annual fee for the first year, too.

We're focused here on the rewards and perks that come with each card. These cards won't be worth it if you're paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it's important to pay your balance in full each month, make payments on time, and only spend what you can afford to pay.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express usually offers a welcome bonus of a $150 statement credit after you spend $1,000 in the first three months, but it's now increased the offer to  20% back on purchases at Amazon.com on the Card in the first 6 months, up to $200 back (plus, you can earn $100 back after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card within the first 6 months).

American Express Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

The standard welcome bonus for the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is a $250 statement credit after you spend $1,000 in the first three months from account opening.

The current offer gets you a $300 statement credit instead, after meeting a minimum spending requirement of $3,000 — but you have six months rather than three months to meet it. Plus, this limited-time welcome bonus waives the $95 annual fee for the first year.

This offer is available until December 10, so make sure you apply by that date if you're interested.

These offers can help save money on essentials during the pandemic

With that caveat out of the way, these two offers look pretty good, especially with the first-year annual fee waived on the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express. If you can meet the spending thresholds, you'll walk away not only with powerful new tools for collecting cash back, but with a nice new chunk of change, too.

With the future of travel still uncertain thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, some people are turning to cash back cards over travel rewards cards to reap rewards they can use right now. And particularly at a time when many people are cooking more than eating out and driving more than flying, Amex's bonuses on US supermarkets and US gas stations are ultra-useful.

Both cards offer benefits beyond the ability to earn cash back

A solid structure for earning cash back is not all this Amex pair has to offer. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express comes with purchase protection that guards items you buy with the card from theft and damage for up to 90 days and $1,000 per incident, with a cap of $50,000 per calendar year.

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express also comes with return protection within the first 90 days of making a purchase with the card; if a merchant won't take an item back, Amex may refund the customer up to $300 per item, with a cap of $1,000 per year.

Other benefits include car rental loss and damage insurance, as well as access to American Express Experiences, which offers access to ticket presales and cardmember-only events.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, for its part, also sports purchase protection for up to 90 days, and holders of the card get access to American Express Experiences, too.

These offers won't last forever—in fact, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express welcome bonus is only available until December 10. Amex hasn't shared an end date for the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, so there's no telling how long that offer will be available. So the bottom line is if you want to take advantage, don't wait too long!
