Brazil's new welfare program will keep within spending cap -minister
BRASILIA, Aug 9 (Reuters) – Brazil’s new social welfare program planned by President Jair Bolsonaro’s government will not exceed the country’s constitutionally-mandated spending ceiling, Citizenship Minister Joao Roma said on Monday.
Bolsonaro says the government will increase by at least 50% the current “Bolsa Familia” welfare benefit for millions of Brazil’s poorest people that will be renamed “Auxilio Brasil” and start monthly payments in November.
“We want to increase the average payment, but we have to act with fiscal responsibility to avoid an imbalance in government finances,” Roma said in a news conference.
