Firm’s new facility will cater to the northeast: Britannia MD
Britannia Industries Ltd. (BIL) has unveiled its largest greenfield manufacturing facility in the country at Guwahati in Assam. Entailing an investment of ₹170 crore, the unit would produce an array of BIL products to cater extensively to Assam and the northeast.
“This is Britannia’s largest greenfield manufacturing facility, and will cater to the growing demand from the northeast,” said Varun Berry, managing director, BIL.
“The government’s recent initiatives positions Assam as a gateway to South- Asian and South-East Asian markets. The State could be an ideal base to evaluate business expansion to international markets,” he said.
‘To be total foods firm’
“We are very excited about this launch as it helps augment our vision to be a total foods company and strengthen our position as a market leader in the packaged foods industry,” he added.
BIL said in a statement that the unit would also add manufacturing lines for making new product categories in the snacking space in the near future.
The 22-acre unit has an annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes and a women-centric workforce comprising 70% of the total personnel. It would employ a total workforce of 1,000 when the factory commences full-fledged operations. BIL also plans to invest in a finished goods distribution centre at an investment of ₹20 crore, which will cater to the entire North-East market.
