Ann Widdecombe slammed Conservative plotters speculating about the possibility of internal divisions as well as a possible leadership comeback from Boris Johnson. Referring to Mr. Johnson’s remarks during his final speech as leader of the country in which he urged the UK and the whole government to “get behind the new Prime Minister”, she backed his comments and stressed the importance for the nation to “give Liz Truss the chance” to deliver what she has been processing amid the ongoing energy crisis.

Ms Widdecombe told Jeremy Vine: “Last night already on the media people were speculating about divisions and another leadership contest.

“For heaven’s sake, get behind the new leader!”

Referring to Mr Johnson’s address, she continued: “I think Boris Johnson got it right when he says we now have to get behind Liz Truss.

“[I agree with the claim] that Liz Truss has to get behind the people, but to be fair she has talked about hardly anything else other than helping people with their household bills.

“Give her the chance to do that. I mean, I think this is so important, give her the chance.”

Jeremy Vine compared Ms Thatcher’s tenure, which saw her in power from 1979 to 1990, with other Tory leaders such as Theresa May and Boris Johnson who served for a shorter period of time.

He said: “Ms Thatcher got 11 and a half, this thing is now happening so often, it’s happening between elections all the time.”

Ms Widdecombe also said: “For better or for worse, and that is what the parliamentary party is trying to do from time to time.

“It turned on May, it turned on Thatcher. In the whole 23 years that I was there, you always had perception turning on its leader”.

The comments came after the final speech as Prime Minister held by Mr Johnson on Tuesday morning before departing from 10 Downing Street.

In his address to the nation, he promised to give Liz Truss his “most fervent support”.

Referring to the plan she is set to announce to tackle the ongoing crisis, he also vowed to “get behind Liz Truss every step of the step of the way”.

Speaking to the Conservative Party and the whole nation, he urged: “it is time to get behind the new Prime Minister”.

Despite no official announcements from Ms Truss and her team, the new Prime Minister is believed to be considering the implementation of a freeze on the energy price cap as part of the measure she is planning to put in place to tackle the current cost of living crisis.

The measure, which is expected to last until January next year or possibly until 2024 if implemented, would see typical households’ energy bills frozen at around the current energy price level of just under £2000.

Both Mr Johnson and Ms Truss are now en route to meet the Queen in Balmoral, following the visit, around 4pm, Ms Truss will officially give her first address as new UK Prime Minister.
