Foreign secretary Liz Truss maintained that foreign countries are willing to collaborate with the UK despite Britain’s departure from the European Union. She insisted the country is better off on its own as Brexit Britain no longer needs the green light of EU members to negotiate with the rest of the world. BBC presenter Nick Robinson confronted her with concerns that some nations would be reluctant to do business with “little Britain” now and that the diplomacies would consequently be damaged.
Mr Robinson could not resist telling her that she has to adopt a clearer approach when she gives a speech as the country needs to be reassured that leaving the EU and a free market conservative has not affected Britain’s prospects.
But Ms Truss spoke eloquently about the benefits that being outside of the now 27-member European Union has for independent Britain, noting the UK has the “fifth-largest economy” worldwide and emphasising that it no longer needs the consensus of the other members of the EU to strike deals with foreign countries.
Mr Robinson explicitly told her that resuming a collaboration with the EU would heighten the UK’s chances of improving relationships with the rest of the world.
The BBC Political Thinking host said: “There is another case you need for Remain, which is relevant to your job now.

“When you are speaking for 500 million people that really carries weight. In other words, if Britain are in the EU, you Liz Truss said that carries real weight.
“The truth is there is a danger in diplomacies there that we are just in diplomatic terms, little Britain unless we can get an alliance with other European countries.
But Ms Truss felt that finally having fate in its own hands and not depending on other countries will go a long way towards speeding up negotiations with countries like Indonesia for example.
She said: “We are the fifth-largest European economy in the world.

“We now have a freedom to deploy our trade policy, our diplomatic heft.
“And our Defence and Security policy at the same time.”
“What I am seeing is that countries want to work with us. I was recently in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.”

The Foreign Secretary added: “These are vital countries, Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world.
“These are countries that we can now do much more with because we are free to be able to do that.
“And the fact is, the European Union, is quite a clunky operation. You’ve got to get agreement now across 27 countries and it’s not delivering those type of trade deals.
“It’s not delivering that type of diplomacy.”
