Author Tom Bower believes Boris Johnson holds out hope of one day mounting a stunning political comeback. The ousted Conservative leader called on party colleagues to unite behind his successor, Liz Truss during his leaving speech outside Downing Street on Tuesday. However, Tom Bower suggests Mr Johnson will lose no time in “preparing the foundations” for a return to frontline politics.

“Asked about a rapid return, he told GB News: “In the short term, there’s no chance at all, as far as I can imagine.
“In his mind, he is Churchill, and he’s going into what Churchill would call his wilderness years.
“They’re very well paid because he’ll write his memoirs and…he’ll make speeches which are phenomenally well paid.
