EU leaders finally launched a major post-Brexit reset of the bloc after months of delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The so-called Conference on the Future of Europe will see the bloc’s chiefs touring EU capitals for two years before proposed reforms are drawn up for the bloc based on public feedback.

But the initiative was trashed by furious MEPs who were prompt to criticise the efforts of the European Commission and Council.

French MEP Manon Aubry warned “symbolic” exercises of communications with European citizens will not be enough to convince people eurocrats are willing to change.

She blasted: “The Conference on the Future of Europe cannot be limited to a communication exercise.

“Symbolic reforms will not be enough: new European treaties are needed if we want to face the climate crises and inequalities.”

The group of The Left in the European Parliament also lambasted the project.

In a joint statement, the heads Co-Presidents of the group said: “The Left will be insisting that this is a people-focused project with treaty change a fundamental part of the objectives.

“Only by ensuring genuine citizen involvement can we build a process that leads to the much-needed changes to Europe’s institutional make up.”

They continued: “A top-down show dominated by politicians will be utterly counter-productive.

“After the year we have all been through, we need to amplify the voices of front-line workers, youth, migrants, women, and the marginalised throughout the continent.

“We already know what the usual suspects will say, let’s hear new voices, new ideas.”

“Citizens and MEPs must be fully involved and heard throughout the whole process.

“We strongly regret that only some political groups can vote in the executive board of the Conference.

“How can you pretend to make Europe more democratic if the consultation process itself is biased from the very beginning?”

The plans were also attacked outside of the EU Parliament by French leader of the UPR Francois Asselineau.

The Frexit campaigner was even more forceful in his criticism.

He wrote: “Since the Treaty of Rome in 1957, Eurocrats have never ceased to wonder how to make possible a utopia that does not work.

“The EU of 15 was already not working in 2001

“A ‘Convention on the future of Europe’ was launched to make the EU of 27 work!

“It ended in a general fiasco.

“In 2021 nothing is going well.

“And yet the EU must quickly grow to 32 states…

“This is objectively delusional. It can only end very badly.”

He added: “The British understood this and opted for Brexit.

“Prisoners of their dogma, Europeanists refuse to see it.

“Blinded by ideology, the President of the Commission, the President of the Parliament and the Portuguese PM who has the rotating presidency of the Council of Europe for 6 months has just launched a new Convention on the future of Europe.”

He continued: “Pathetic: the same recipe as in 2001!

“The outcome of this new ‘Convention’ is predictable. No people will be interested in it.

“The usual lobbies will claim to represent ‘European citizens’.

“They will demand more powers for the EU. This will lead to a crisis.”
