Denver Mayor Hancock appoints interim law enforcement watchdog

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock appointed Gregg Crittenden on Monday to serve as the interim police watchdog while city officials search for a permanent replacement, according to a release.

The appointment bumps Crittenden up from his former position of senior deputy monitor under former Independent Monitor Nick Mitchell, who resigned last month for a job overseeing jail reform in Los Angeles.

The independent monitor position is responsible for discipline of Denver’s law enforcement, investigating deaths at the hands of officers and more.

“The office’s work contributes to making our city safer and I have every confidence that Gregg can lead this office while we begin the search for a permanent director, Hancock said in a statement.

Crittenden has experience as a trial attorney and served as a chief deputy district attorney in Colorado’s Fifth Judicial District, which covers Eagle County, city spokesman Mike Strott said in the news release. He began working in the monitor’s office in 2006 and served as interim monitor in 2012 just before Mitchell was hired.
