Fox News, NBC polls: Biden maintains positive approval ratings as 100-day mark approaches

WASHINGTON — As the 100th day of his administration approaches, President Joe Biden still enjoys net positive ratings from the public on a range of issues, according to polls conducted by Fox News and NBC News.

The polls found identical approval ratings for Biden, with the Fox News survey reporting a 54%-43% net positive approval rating and the NBC News poll reporting a similar 53%-39%.

The findings show Biden has lower popularity than the news outlet’s polls found at similar points in the presidencies of George W. Bush and Barack Obama, though Biden is more popular than his immediate predecessor, former President Donald Trump.

In both polls, Biden’s administration is most supported on its approach to the coronavirus pandemic; 69% of the public approved of Biden’s approach, according to the NBC News poll. The Fox News poll found a lower estimate at 58% approval.

The news comes after Biden touted the US successfully administering 200 million vaccine doses to Americans in his first 100 days. While the pandemic is ongoing, case numbers and deaths are declining in most states after a spike in cases when governments began lifting restrictions, according to recent data from the Johns Hopkins University Covid-19 Tracker.

Biden also received net positive approval ratings in both polls on the economy, with 52%-43% approval in the NBC poll and 48%-42%, per Fox News. The NBC News poll found 52% of Americans approve of Biden’s efforts at “uniting the country,” a task the president emphasized in his inaugural address.

Both polls also found solid disapproval of the president’s handling of immigration and guns, two issues that have gained considerable attention in his first 100 days after a series of high-profile mass shootings and several months of rising numbers of asylum seekers being detained on the US-Mexico border.

The Fox News poll found only 34% ofthose polled approve of Biden’s handling of immigration versus a 52% disapproval. The NBC News poll found similar discontent at 33%-59% net disapproval. On guns, the Fox News survey found a 36%-49% net disapproval on the issue compared with 34%-55% net disapproval in the NBC News poll.

The NBC News poll was conducted from April 17-20 among 1,000 adults, mostly by cellphone. The poll has a margin of error of 3.1%. The Fox News poll was conducted from April 18-21 among 1,002 registered voters on landlines and cellphones with a margin of error of 3%.
