The EU risks finding themselves in a “difficult situation” regarding fishing rights if there is no Brexit deal, a Dutch MEP has warned. Speaking to the EU plenary about the stalled negotiations, Derk Jan Eppink directed his ire over fishermen being “abandoned” to Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier. The UK and EU are currently at a stalemate due to both sides keeping to their red lines, particularly on access to British fishing waters.
He said: “We know Boris Johnson’s history and we all need to be aware of what might happen if there is a no deal.
“When it comes to fisheries, what’s going to happen after Brexit? I think the Netherlands needs to stand by its fishermen if they’re abandoned by the EU.
“If there is no agreement, what’s going to happen, Mr Barnier? What’s going to be the fate of our fishermen if there is a no deal Brexit?
“Obviously we can play the blame game but we risk finding ourselves in a difficult situation.”
