George Galloway surprisingly backed Tony Blair after the former Prime Minister branded Joe Biden an “imbecile” for his botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. Mr Galloway, who has been a staunch critic of Tony Blair and George Bush’s invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, agreed Mr Biden was not fit to be in office as he explained he had longed called for Mr Biden to step down due to his cognitive ability concerns. But Mr Galloway ended any form of niceties with Mr Blair there as he then turned his gaze on the politician and his role causing the disaster in Afghanistan in the first place.

Speaking on his Mother of all Talkshows programme, Mr Galloway told listeners that many may have expected him to back Mr Biden against Mr Blair’s comment but revealed his position was to the contrary.

He explained: “You might, for example, have expected me to rally to the side of President Joe Biden because my arch-enemy Tony Blair today call them an imbecile.

“Now it’s not every day that the former Prime Minister of Britain calls the current president of the United States an imbecile.

“But I’m not going to rally to Joe Biden, because he is an imbecile – Almost politically imbecilic.

“I’ve been saying this to you for months – long before he was elected, you would not send Joe Biden out for a loaf of bread to the shops.

“And yet he’s sitting with his finger on the nuclear trigger, is making decisions of great moment, not just to the United States, but to the world.

“As we have seen over the last 10 days and the fall of Kabul and the return to power of the Taliban.

“Tony Blair was right there, not many times you’ve heard me say that.

“But I’ll tell you something that he didn’t say, is that it was Tony Blair and George W. Bush, that made this mess in the first place.

“And to call the guy who tried to end it the imbecile is to mistake your far greater act of madness.”

In a scathing attack on Mr Biden’s decision to continue the US withdrawal in Afghanistan, Mr Blair said: “It is so obvious the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan in this way was driven not by grand strategy but by politics.

“We didn’t need to do it. We chose to do it.

“We did it in obedience to an imbecilic political slogan about ending ‘the forever wars’ as if our engagement in 2021 was remotely comparable to our commitment 20 or even ten years ago.”

Mr Biden chose to continue the agreement made under the Trump administration which would see the total withdrawal of all US troops from Afghanistan in May 2021.

Mr Biden extended that date to September 11 but when withdrawal began earlier this year, the Taliban reorganised and took over large parts of the country.

In a few weeks, the Taliban retook Kabul as thousands descended on the airport to try and get evacuated.

Armed Forces Minister James Heappey revealed 1,821 people have been evacuated from Kabul in the past 24 hours as pressure mounts on western forces to rescue those trapped in the country.

Mr Biden said he is considering pushing back the full withdrawal on August 31 to make sure everyone is rescued but admitted they do not know how many Americans are on the ground there.
