And the Brexit stalwart also insisted he had seen no evidence to support claims of blackmail levelled by some colleagues against the party’s whips. Mr Johnson’s future remains uncertain, with eyes focused on the report by civil servant Sue Gray into reports of lockdown-busting parties connected to Number 10.

Earlier this month, he apologised in the House of Commons for attending one such event in the Downing Street garden, insisting he believed it to be a “work event”.

Sir John, MP for Wokingham in Berkshire, said: “That’s why I’m trying to get the Government to come out with a new and more exciting agenda of lower taxes and more support for great training, forming your own business, getting your own home, all these other things that take you on the ladder of opportunity.

“I’m saying to the Prime Minister and his senior ministers that it’s their only option.

“Those of us who support you, and that’s still most of us, want you to do well, but we want you to get on with this.

“Your best way of winning back lost support is to show that you’re completely focused on the people’s priorities, not mesmerised by backbiting in Westminster. Get on the front foot, and let’s have some Brexit wins.

“We are urging everybody to be green but it’s still taxing them and we weren’t allowed to take the tax off when we’re in the EU because it was VAT.”

Sir John was sceptical about claims MPs considering triggering a vote of no-confidence in Mr Johnson have been subjected to threats to “withdraw investments” from their constituencies, plus “intimidation” from No 10 staff.

William Wragg MP, chairman of the Commons Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee, said such behaviour could amount to “blackmail”, urging colleagues to report them to the police.

However, Sir John said: “Even if a whip did have a heated conversation and say something silly why would anybody believe them? They’re not the minister and everybody knows there is a proper process in British Government.”

Sir John suggested it was important to retain a sense of perspective amid reports of angry confrontations and raised voices.

He said: “Isn’t that true of every walk of life?

“Some people fly off the handle, say wrong things.

“They either don’t mean them or can’t enforce them.

“I don’t want to give credence to the idea that this has happened – there has to be a proven case via a recording or something.”
