Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer was swiped by an LBC caller over his Conservative stance and refusal to join picket lines in solidarity with protesters. The Labour leader has called again on his party’s MPs to stay away from picket lines, as strikes continue over pay for workers while the cost of living soars. This is the second time Mr Starmer makes such a call in an effort to dissuade his MPs from joining the strike.
LBC’s caller Sean, a Labour voter, blasted: “Get on with the job. Keir Starmer, get back to the job that you were in, and given somebody a chance to lead this party.
“Because we’re never going to get into government with him.
“We’re never going to get into government.”
LBC’s Ben Kentish said: “Don’t you think, Sean, there’s a case to be made as he’s making that actually people don’t want the Prime Minister in waiting to be joining picket lines and waving placards. They want like a serious politician and acting as if he’s already Prime Minister. That’s what he’s trying to do.”
Sean erupted: “He’s never going to be Prime Minister. He’ll never be Prime Minister of the Labour party. Because he’s gone the wrong way about it.”
LBC’s Ben Kentish then said: “Short of picket lines, what should he be doing differently?”
Sean shouted: “He should be standing there with them. Look, I don’t agree with you on this.”
LBC’s Ben Kentish asked: “And you think that him more likely to become Prime Minister if he goes and joins the picket lines if he goes and joins the picket lines?”
Sean screamed: “If he goes against what the Tories are doing – the Tories make me physically sick.”
LBC’s Ben Kentish noted: “Sure, the British people elected the Tories. So, they might make you physically sick.”
Sean yelled: “If it wasn’t for Brexit they won the premiership.”
LBC’s Ben Kentish asked: “Are you still a Labour voter? Would you vote for Keir Starmer?”
Sean said: “I’ll never vote for another party.”

LBC’s Ben Kentish said: “So, to win the next election, your party needs to win over people who voted Tory. That’s what Keir Starmer is trying to do.”
Sean erupted: “To win the next election is to get rid of Keir Starmer. He is a Tory.”
To justify his call, Keir Starmer said the Labour party’s purpose is to “resolve issues” and “sit around the cabinet table” rather than “go to a picket line.” The Labour leader also came under fire for ruling a return into the EU single markets or customs union under a Labour Govenrment – moving closer to the Conservative stance.
