The Conservative Party conference starts today in Manchester, the first in-person conference for the Tories in two years. The event will be closely followed by Brits as Boris Johnson is expected to use it to set out his vision for post-Covid Britain. Here’s how to watch the conference live.
Conference season hasn’t been the same since the pandemic hit.
Usually, politics fans keenly gather to watch their party’s annual conference.
But since 2019, all of the major UK political parties have had to cancel their in-person events.
Today the Tories kick off their conference season with a new “hybrid” style event.
The conference will include both in-person and virtual events, which party members can stream from the comfort of their own homes.
Key timings and information about the conference
The Conservative conference is one of the largest in the UK, every year more than 10,000 people attend.
This year is expected to be no different as Manchester braces itself for an anticipated 11,500 attendees.
The four-day conference started at 11am on Sunday October 3.
It’s scheduled to end on Wednesday, October 6, but some minor events will take place on Friday, October 1 as well.
The live events will take place at Manchester Central convention complex.
How can you watch the conference?
To attend physical speeches you will need a ticket to enter as the event is a secure zone.
Party members and guests can buy tickets to attend the events in Manchester or watch from home using the conference’s virtual platform.
Prices start from £24 for virtual events and £55 for in-person events.
The major speeches will take place in Manchester Central convention complex’s main hall.
Additionally, there are normally secondary events, lobby group meetings, debates and fringe meetings by interested parties.
Networking events and socials in the evening also characterise the conference.
Who will be speaking at the conference?
The most eagerly anticipated event at the conference is the leader’s speech, but the exact start time of the PM’s speech hasn’t been announced yet.
In a break from tradition, Mr Johnson is expected to make his speech in the centre of the room surrounded by his ministers instead of on a stage at the front according to The Times.
Other key speeches will come from Mr Johnson’s senior ministers, as they often use the conference to launch major new policies.
Carrie Johnson, the PM’s wife, is well-known for her involvement in politics.
She is due to get involved in this year’s conference in a major way by giving a speech about LGBTQ+ rights.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak is expected to outline new funding for schemes designed to increase employment prospects for those looking for work, in his speech later today.
