Lauren Boebert votes against medals for U.S. Capitol police

Republican U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado voted against a bill Tuesday that will award the Congressional Gold Medal to all U.S. Capitol police and Washington, D.C., police for defending the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot.

The bill passed by a margin of 406-21, with all House Democrats and 188 Republicans in favor. Boebert was the only Coloradan to vote against the bill.

Boebert, of Garfield County, has not said why she voted against it; her spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The freshman congresswoman has quickly established a reputation in Congress for eye-catching remarks and votes.

She is also a stated supporter of law enforcement. On May 10, she tweeted, “Republicans will ALWAYS back the blue & honor their service!” On Twitter last September, she vowed, “I will always stand by our great law enforcement!”

The legislation that the House voted for will award four Congressional Gold Medals. One will be displayed at Capitol Police headquarters and another at D.C. Metropolitan Police Department headquarters. The others will be displayed at the Smithsonian Institute and the Capitol with plaques to honor the law enforcement agencies.
