Michel claims EU single market paved way for peace in Northern Ireland

Charles Michel has claimed the EU single market laid the groundwork for peace in Northern Ireland.

He said: “The European project, one could say, helped to prepare the ground for the seat of peace to take fruit in Northern Ireland.”

The President of the European Council said Northern Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement are a “powerful symbol of what our shared values can be”.

He added: “Great allies like the UK and the EU need each other, and they need to stand together to face challenges.

“Let’s keep building on this.”
