In an emotional late-night post on social media, the Conservative MP said she was “angry” as debate rages.
Posting on Instagram she wrote: “It’s 2am and I’m lying awake because, as a woman, I’m so angry. I’m angry because on the walk home today I felt crazily anxious when a guy innocently walked up behind me to overtake me.
“I’m angry that so many of my friends have needed to share their stories of sexual assault (but I’m proud of them for doing so). I’m angry that so many women don’t get believed.
“I’m angry that female colleagues get so much social media abuse above and beyond male colleagues.
“I’m especially angry that people are trying to politicise this important conversation about how we make our society safer.”
The MP for Bishop Auckland said everyone needed to be part of the conversation, “men, women, all ages, all political persuasions”.
