Nicola Sturgeon breaks silence after ‘difficult’ arrest of husband

Former SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said the last few days have been “obviously difficult” as she finally broke her silence after her husband was arrested. Peter Murrell, the party’s former chief executive was detained amid an investigation into the party’s finances. He was released on Wednesday evening without charge pending further investigation.

Speaking outside her home near Glasgow, she told reporters: “Well first off, there is obviously nothing I can say about the ongoing investigation.

“As much as there are things I may want to say, I’m not able to do so, other than to say that, as has been the case, there will continue to be full cooperation.

“The last few days have been obviously difficult, quite dramatic at times, but I understand that is part of a process.”

Police spent two days examining the couple’s family home in Glasgow. The investigation was regarding the spending of around £600,000 which was earmarked for an independence campaign.

After his arrest, it was uncovered that the SNP’s external auditors, accountancy firm Johnston Carmichael severed ties with the party.

A senior figure in the party has said the party faces its biggest crisis in 50 years.

Mike Russell, the SNP president and a former minister, also said he does not think independence can be achieved “right now”.
