Amber Rudd claimed that potential successors to Dame Cressida Dick are already being pinpointed after the current Metropolitan Police Commissioner has come in for criticism for the way she has gone about several issues, including a late change of mind to inquire Boris Johnson’s party allegations. The former Home Secretary pointed to the brief length of Commissioner Dick’s new contract as an indicator that change may be in the air with her prospective departure is on the horizon. Cressida Dick is facing an almighty battle to stay in her job and Ms Rudd claimed that she will have analysed every detail absolutely meticulously before releasing the report and without taking the political “ramifications” into account.

Talking to ITV Peston, Ms Rudd insisted that the protracted police report will not necessarily boost her odds of staying on the job for her full two-year extension.

She said: “It may or may not have worked out for the Prime Minister. It’s very difficult to tell.

“It’s certainly given him a longer period but in the end that may or not may be a good thing.

“But I do know that she will have behaved absolutely scrupulously without considering any of the political ramifications, which may or may not have been a good idea.”

BBC’s Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg also suggested on Wednesday the Met Police is seeking to make a decision of Dick’s successor before the autumn,

And Ms Rudd went on to discuss senior civil servant Sue Gray’s “devastating report about Mr Johnson’s party bashes during lockdown.”

Ms Gray’s report found highlighted “failures of leadership and judgement”, revealing the existence of a drinking culture in Downing Street.

She also advised widespread reform across Downing Street to improve the working culture.

She said: “It’s been an absolutely devastating report and it does require root and branch change in the same way the first report got root and branch change!”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s patience with Ms Dick seems to be evaporating as he put her “on notice” following a string of “shocking” below-par behaviour by some officers.

Findings by the Met Police watchdog revealed “disgraceful” discrimination, bullying, misogyny, and sexual harassment among PCs based at Charing Cross police station in central London.

A spokesperson for Mr Khan revealed that the Mayor of London furiously told Ms Dick that the current imbroglio brings back unwanted memories of the hostile police officers from his childhood in the 70s and 80s.

He said: “The Mayor made clear to the Commissioner how angry he is with a return to the bad days of the Met of his childhood in the 1970s and 80s, and that neither he nor Londoners will put up with this.

“He has put the Commissioner on notice.”

He added: “He said the Met needs to urgently show it has an effective plan for restoring the trust and confidence of Londoners in the police and to drive out the culture of racism, homophobia, bullying and misogyny which clearly still exists within its ranks.”
