Shapps sounds final death knell on Boris’s political comeback with 4-word swipe
Grant Shapps appears to have dismissed a possible political comeback from Boris Johnson, bluntly saying: “The world has moved on.”
He said he is “sure” the former Prime Minister has “many other things he wants to get on and do” outside of politics.
This comes just days after Mr Johnson announced he will be resigning as an MP with immediate effect.
Speaking to Sophy Ridge on Sky News, Mr Shapps was asked about comments made by former Conservative Party chairman Jake Berry, who said: “You voted for Brexit – the establishment blocked it. You voted for Boris Johnson – the establishment has forced him out. Who is in charge here… The voters or the blob?”
But hitting back, Mr Shapps said: “The world has moved in – he is the one who has removed himself from the current political scene by standing down from Parliament.”
Asked if Mr Johnson could make a comeback, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero said: “I’m sure he’s got many other things he wants to get on and do”, adding: “He is making a lot of money around the world.”
But he caveated: “One thing to know about Boris Johnson is – never predict what Boris Johnson will do.”
