Gareth Southgate’s men will take on Roberto Mancini’s Italian side at Wembley Stadium at 8pm tonight with more than 20 million people expected to tune in. Now the former Scottish Conservative leader said the competition “had given a country a lift” at a time Scotland’s position in the Union remains vulnerable over the prospect of a second independence referendum.

Speaking today, she added: “[The Euros are] something we can all focus on and talk about which isn’t Covid or Brexit or recovery or culture wars or any of the other swirling, angry, exhausting debates that rage.”

Ms Davidson, who is set to enter the House of Lords later this summer, claimed it had been “a hard year and we’re all tired” following a tense constitutional argument during the Scottish elections.

The former MSP for Edinburgh Central said those who want to “co-opt any potential England victory as part of a proxy war on the constitutional argument will get short shrift too.”

She continued: “There are more important things than petty squabbles and, if this talented, socially conscious team from the country next door do triumph, then well done them.
