Labour MP John McDonnell has been shut down by Andrea Leadsom after the Jeremy Corbyn ally claimed the UK is “doing nothing” to tackle climate change. Ms Leadsom slammed the former Shadow Chancellors remarks and pointed out the role the UK Government had in pushing the climate agenda at the G7 and G20. Ms Leadsom also highlighted that the UK is soon to host the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

Ms Leadsom told LBC: “I think it is absolutely ridiculous what this insulate UK are doing.

“The UK are the good guys, we are leading the G20, we are leading the G7, we are about to host COP26.

“Our ambitions are massive, the Prime Minister has just announced today over 500 million to help lesser developing economies.

“He is in New York right now trying to urge countries to be far far more ambitious in their commitments in lending £150 billion sums to developing countries, to middle-income countries so they can decarbonize.

“What John McDonnell are you talking about?”

“I am talking about the Green Alliance which has just advised you, this is all the national environmental groups coming together.

“To tell you that actually, you are going to fail your targets or 2035, you are going to fail to meet your2050 target of net zero.

He added: “In terms of what you have done around homes, you tore up the very regulations which will enable us to at least have some clear view of how we insulate family homes.

“That’s it, it’s not my view just listen to people.

“Engage with them that is all these people are asking for.”

It comes as Boris Johnson launched a blistering attack at a meeting of the UN meeting to warn world leaders “nowhere near enough” is being done to tackle the climate emergency.

The Prime Minister told the UN General Assembly: “£veryone nods and we all agree that something must be done”.

“Yet I confess I’m increasingly frustrated that the ‘something’ to which many of you have committed is nowhere near enough.

“It is the biggest economies in the world that are causing the problem, while the smallest suffer the worst consequences.

“And while progress is being made all over the world, the gulf between what has been promised, what is actually being delivered, and what needs to happen… it remains vast.”
