The former spokesman for Tony Blair lashed out at Liz Truss for the Conservative Party’s 12-year record on how the civil service has been treated. Sky’s Kamali Melbourne was forced to interject and point out he cannot expect her to make the “same mistakes” as her predecessors. Speaking to Sky News, Mr Campbell said: “I don’t know her that well. Those who have worked for her before and the impression you get is she tends to ignore advice and adopt an idiosyncratic approach to policymaking and decision making.

“Right through the 12 years of this Government, there has been a systematic undermining of the civil service and I think if she had any sense at all she would put a stop to that.

“She’s facing massive challenges. She’s going to need the support of the civil service and I think she should do two things.

“Try to bring her divided party together and the second thing is to be able to understand she won’t be able to do that much unless she gets the civil service machine up and running properly.

“It will depend on her personality but I do think that our experience of the civil service is if you give them clear direction, they genuinely know what your priorities are.

“If she goes and does the same gaslighting and populist approach that we’ve seen from Johnson then I’m pretty sure she’ll fail and she’ll fail pretty quickly.”

The Sky presenter hit back: “Don’t you have any optimism she will have learned from those mistakes?

“Mr Johnson had to replace his team two or three times because of errors in judgement, errors he put in place himself.

“You can’t expect Liz Truss having seen that to make similar mistakes and perhaps she will reinvigorate the civil service.”

Angela Rayner's Truss swipe backfires

Ms Truss, who will travel to Balmoral to accept the role of prime minister from the Queen later on Tuesday, is thought to be drawing up plans for a freeze in bills which could cost around £100 billion.

Sterling lifted on Tuesday as media reports offered new details on how incoming Prime Minister Liz Truss is planning to tackle Britain’s growing energy crisis.

Household bills are due to jump by 80 percent in October, but a source familiar with the situation has told Reuters that Truss is looking at freezing bills this winter, in a plan that could cost more than the COVID-19 furlough scheme.

After winning a leadership race to take over from Boris Johnson, Truss must now tackle an economy heading for recession, soaring prices on fuel and consumer goods, and a currency that is among the world’s worst performing this year.

Although the pound rallied slightly on Tuesday as more concrete details of her potential policy actions emerged, sterling is still wallowing around two and a half-year lows amid concerns about how Britain will pay for this support.

The UK’s public finances remain weighed down by the government’s huge coronavirus spending spree.

Public debt as a share of economic output is not far off 100 percent, up from about 80 percent before the pandemic.

The pound has slid 15 percent against the dollar as inflation surged to double digits and growth grinds to a halt.

Truss’s hints at tax cuts while campaigning for the leadership hit British government bonds in August with their biggest monthly price decline for decades, as investors fear a balance of payments crisis.
