Trump as they move ahead quickly with the Senate trial.<\/p>\n<p>The House managers presented for nearly eight hours on Wednesday, walking the jury \u2014 senators who were in the Capitol during the attack on Jan. 6 \u2014 through footage of the riot and of Mr. Trump\u2019s speeches in the weeks leading up to it. Most of that has been publicly available and previously televised.<\/p>\n<p>But parts of their presentation \u2014 like security camera footage of staff members sheltering in offices and radio chatter from Capitol Police officers \u2014 had not been released before. The timeline of events, though, and the majority of the content shown would have been familiar to most Americans who watched the assault as it unfolded.<\/p>\n<h3>The Trump Impeachment \u203a<\/h3>\n<h4>What You Need to Know<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul class=\"css-1xzcza9\">\n<li>A trial is being held to decide whether former President Donald J. Trump is guilty of\u00a0inciting a deadly mob\u00a0of his supporters when they\u00a0stormed the Capitol\u00a0on Jan. 6, violently breaching security measures and sending lawmakers into hiding\u00a0as they met to certify President Biden\u2019s victory.<\/li>\n<li>The House\u00a0voted 232 to 197\u00a0to approve a single article of\u00a0impeachment, accusing Mr. Trump of \u201cinciting violence against the government of the United States\u201d in his quest to overturn the election results. Ten Republicans joined the Democrats in voting to impeach him.<\/li>\n<li>To convict\u00a0Mr. Trump,\u00a0the Senate would need a two-thirds majority\u00a0to be in agreement. This means at least 17 Republican senators would have to vote with Senate Democrats to convict.<\/li>\n<li>A conviction seems unlikely. Last month,\u00a0only five Republicans\u00a0in the Senate sided with Democrats in beating back a Republican attempt to dismiss the charges because Mr. Trump is no longer in office. Only 27 senators say they are undecided\u00a0about whether to convict Mr. Trump.<\/li>\n<li>If the Senate convicts Mr. Trump, finding him guilty of \u201cinciting violence against the government of the United States,\u201d senators could then vote on whether to bar him from holding future office. That vote would only require a simple majority, and if it came down to party lines, Democrats would prevail with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tiebreaking vote.<\/li>\n<li>If the\u00a0Senate does not convict\u00a0Mr. Trump, the former president could be eligible to run for public office once again.
