REUTERS\/Kacper Pempel  <\/figcaption><p>CAPE TOWN (Reuters) &#8211; South Africa\u2019s Western Cape region has reported its first cases of African swine fever at two small farms, after outbreaks in other parts of the country, the provincial head of agriculture said.<\/p>\n<p>Recent outbreaks have also been reported in the Free State, Eastern Cape and Gauteng provinces, agricultural authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA survey to determine the extent of the disease\u2019s spread in Mfuleni and the immediate surrounding area has already been initiated and will include the collection of blood samples from selected sick pigs from suspect farms,\u201d Ivan Meyer, the Western Cape\u2019s agriculture minister, said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>African swine fever is incurable in pigs, and poses a threat to food stocks, but is harmless to humans.<\/p>\n<p>China, the world\u2019s biggest pork producer, reported new variants of the African swine fever virus on Thursday, natural mutations in the virus that ravaged China\u2019s pig herd during 2018 and 2019 and which continues to kill hogs.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-safrica-swinefever\/african-swine-fever-detected-in-s-africas-western-cape-idUSKBN2AQ0NJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read Full Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pigs are seen in a piggery at a village near Warsaw, file.
