(Photo: Max Becherer, AP)<\/span><\/p>\n NEW ORLEANS \u2013 A police officer working security at a high school basketball game in New Orleans was shot in the chest by a man who was denied entry into the game, authorities said.<\/p>\n The shooting came Friday evening after the accused gunman, identified as John Shallerhorn,\u00a0refused to put on a mask while trying to enter the game at George Washington Carver High School, according to court documents reviewed by nola.com.\u00a0<\/p>\n Shallerhorn, 35, got into an altercation with a staff member after he tried to enter the game, authorities said. The officer \u2014 later identified as Tulane University Police Cpl. Martinus Mitchum \u2014 went to intervene, and Shallerhorn shot him, police said.<\/p>\n Two loud bangs were captured on video shared by\u00a0WGNO-TV\u00a0as the high schoolers played. A photographer from\u00a0WWL-TV\u00a0also reported that the gunfire could be heard inside the gym.<\/p>\n The school was put on lockdown after the shooting, news outlets reported, and the game was ultimately called off.<\/p>\n Mitchum, who also was a deputy constable with the Second City Court, later died at a hospital.<\/p>\n Shallerhorn was arrested and charged with first-degree murder of a policeman. He’s also charged with armed robbery since he was accused of robbing a man at gunpoint in the parking lot prior to the shooting, WVUE-TV\u00a0reported. (Photo: Max Becherer, AP)<\/span><\/p>\n The fallen officer had been \u201ca fixture at Carver sporting events and parades\u201d according to a statement from the high school. \u201cAll spectators, families, and players are safe \u2014 a testament (to) the officer, outside security support, school staff, and systems in place.\u201d<\/p>\n The school also said it would offer resources to anyone in the Carver community who needed support in the wake of the shooting.<\/p>\n Just moments before Shallerhorn attempted to enter the school, authorities said he robbed a man at gunpoint in the parking lot. Police said a 39-year-old man was sitting inside his vehicle when he was approached by the suspect.<\/p>\n Shallerhorn raised his shirt and brandished a gun while demanding the victim\u2019s medallion chain, police said.
