Christopher Black\/WHO\/Handout<\/figcaption><p>GENEVA (Reuters) &#8211; The arrival of COVID-19 vaccines should not tempt countries to relax efforts to fight the coronavirus pandemic, top World Health Organization officials said on Friday, citing concern that Brazil\u2019s epidemic could spread to other countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think we\u2019re through this. We\u2019re not,\u201d Mike Ryan, WHO\u2019s top emergency expert, told an online briefing. \u201cCountries are going to lurch back into third and fourth surges if we\u2019re not careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Record COVID-19 deaths have been reported in Brazil this week and its hospital system is on the brink of collapse, driven partly by a more contagious variant first identified there.<\/p>\n<p>On a global level, COVID-19 case numbers reversed a six-week downwards trend last week despite the delivery of millions of doses of vaccines in recent weeks, WHO data showed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow is not the time for Brazil or anywhere else for that matter to be relaxing,\u201d Ryan added. \u201cThe arrival of vaccines is a moment of great hope but it is also potentially a moment where we lose concentration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the epidemic in Brazil as \u201cvery, very concerning\u201d and warned of a possible regional spillover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Brazil is not serious, then it will continue to affect all the neighbourhood there and beyond,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-who\/who-warns-against-relaxing-pandemic-fight-worries-about-brazil-idUSKBN2AX1ZG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read Full Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FILE PHOTO: Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) speaks during the opening of the 148th session of the Executive Board [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":108812,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.7 -
