Covid fears and travel restrictions triggered Marion and David Ryan’s change of plan. But when that happened a second time, the pair were looking at a total £440 switching bill on top of their £388 return tickets to Lanzarote. They booked their holiday a year ago with Ryanair and were due to fly out last January. As the pandemic worsened the retired couple, concerned about the health risks, decided to push that forward to early May.

We can do this but will have to pay a second £220 switching fee. This situation is not our fault but we don’t know where to turn, this is getting so expensive.”

Timing had not been on the Ryans’ side as Ryanair is offering zero change flight transfer fees within a certain window this summer. The couple’s dates however fall outside this.

We asked the airline if it could waive the second charge, and it responded promptly saying it would look into it. However bigger forces then kicked in because of lockdown with Marion and David’s flight being cancelled anyway.

Rather than a voucher, they are opting for the offer of a cash refund which, it has been confirmed, will include the flight change fee.

Marion and David told Crusader: “We now have the space to plan without the money pressures, we aren’t going on holiday at the moment but still feel like winners, thank you.”
