Speaking to Times Radio, Lord Karan Bilimoria, the founder of Cobra beer and crossbencher in the House of Lords, slammed Boris Johnson and the Government for not following data on Coronavirus as they said they would. He took aim at the Government’s response to the falling Covid deaths and hospitalisations after one Covid-related death was recorded on Monday. He raised questions over why decisions are not being “data-led” and if the hospitality industry can reopen “safely” then “they should reopen as soon as possible”. The peer went on to hit out at the impact Covid has had in hospitality.

Lord Bilimoria said: “Is this reopening roadmap going to be driven by dates or data? The government has always said it is going to be driven by data.”

The Cobra founder added: “My gut feeling has always been with the vaccination programme going so well in this country and full credit to Nadhim Zahawi the vaccinations minister, it’s rolling out very well. We have the ability to vaccinate half a million a day if we had the supplies

“We have had the sad deaths declining rapidly down to one yesterday and I’ve always said what if the sad deaths go down to zero and the hospitalisations go down to zero well before the 21st June?”

He questioned: “Are we still going to wait until the 21st June knowing the hospitality industry has suffered so badly?

JUST IN: See you in court! Sturgeon warns Boris he will need legal action to stop the second referendum

He continued by telling listeners that “four million jobs in hospitality and tourism” have been impacted by covid restrictions and lockdowns and that “those businesses have been shut!”

Lord Bilimoria added: “It has been devastating and thanks to government support those businesses have been saved but now they’ve got to be given the chance to recover.

“As long as we can reopen safely, the reopening should take place as soon as safely possible.”

But he hammered home that “if they can do it safely, then they should reopen as soon as possible.”

The comments come after International Trade Secretary Liz Truss erupted into a ferocious argument with radio host Julia Hartley-Brewer about the current lockdown timetable, with both disagreeing on when restrictions should be lifted giving plummeting deaths from covid.

Ms Truss defended the Government’s position on the ongoing restrictions, saying: “We are only going to be safe when everyone in the world is vaccinated.”

But Ms Hartley-Brewer disagreed: “With all due respect that is absolute nonsense… my vaccine works whether someone else is vaccinated or not!”

The debate erupted into chaos the radio host continued to question the “sanity” of the policies despite low covid rates and high vaccination rates while Truss insisted on taking a cautious approach to prevent the “reemergence” of “dangerous variants” in the population.

DON’T MISS:

‘He sucks!’ US voters rate Joe Biden’s first 100 days as US President in brutal slapdown [WORLD]

On Bank Holiday Monday there was one recorded death from Covid-19 in the UK and there were a further 1,453 infections recorded.

Over 49.8 million doses have been administered of a covid vaccine in the UK as of yesterday.

At the time of writing, 15.3M Britons have been fully vaccinated which is 23% of the UK population.

Covid restrictions are due to be scrapped by June 21st but some covid measures including mask-wearing in cinemas and theatres are expected to continue.

Julia Hartley-Brewer clashes with Liz Truss over covid restrictions
