On Friday, 48 of the 73 Scottish constituency results were declared. So far, the SNP have 39 seats, Liberal Democrats four, Conservatives three and Labour two.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the Prime Minister made it clear he would reject calls for a second Scottish independence referendum if Nicola Sturgeon secured another term in office.

He said: “I listened to the Scottish election carefully.

“My impression was that they [the SNP] moved away from the idea of a referendum, and I think very wisely.

“Because I don’t think this is anything like the time to have more constitutional wrangling, to be talking about ripping our country apart, when actually people want to heal our economy and bounce forward together. That’s what people want.”

Mr Johnson added: “I think a referendum in the current context is irresponsible and reckless. Let me leave it at that.”

Ms Sturgeon is likely to gain another term as First Minister but analysts have questioned whether the SNP will win the 65 seats needed for a majority.

Polling guru Prof Sir John Curtice has said there “still is a pathway” for the SNP to gain a majority, “but it is a very very narrow one”.

On Friday, he told BBC: “The most probable outcome is indeed that the SNP is going to be one or two seats short.”

Prof Curtice predicted that if Ms Sturgeon has to form a coalition government it is likely to be an SNP-Green party majority in order to push for a second referendum.

On Friday, the First Minister said she felt “quietly confident” about an overall SNP majority and Scotland with have a second independence referendum within the next five years.

Ms Sturgeon insisted that the push for the referendum could go as high as the Supreme Court.

She told ITV News: “The SNP is on course for a fourth consecutive election victory and a fourth term in office after 14 years in government. That’s an extraordinary achievement.”

DON’T MISS

When asked how she could secure a second vote, Ms Sturgeon responded: “We would proceed with the legislation that is necessary, and that would only happen if it was passed by the Scottish Parliament.

“If he [Boris Johnson] wanted to stop that it would be the case that he would have to go to the Supreme Court to challenge it – and that would be his decision not mine.

“The absurdity of a position where a PM was going to court to overturn the democratic decision of the Scottish people? I don’t think we’ll get to the position.”
