{"id":114999,"date":"2021-05-24T16:30:27","date_gmt":"2021-05-24T16:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fin2me.com\/?p=114999"},"modified":"2021-05-24T16:30:27","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T16:30:27","slug":"gordon-sondland-ex-trump-ambassador-sues-mike-pompeo-for-1-8m-in-impeachment-trial-legal-fees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fin2me.com\/politics\/gordon-sondland-ex-trump-ambassador-sues-mike-pompeo-for-1-8m-in-impeachment-trial-legal-fees\/","title":{"rendered":"Gordon Sondland, ex-Trump ambassador, sues Mike Pompeo for $1.8M in impeachment trial legal fees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2013 A central figure in President Donald Trump\u2019s first impeachment\u00a0filed a $1.8 million lawsuit Monday against former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for legal fees.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Sondland, a hotel magnate who served as Trump\u2019s ambassador to the European Union, contends Pompeo assured him his legal fees would be covered when he was subpoenaed for testimony about Trump\u2019s dealings with Ukraine. \u201cAfter Pompeo learned what Ambassador Sondland\u2019s testimony was before Congress during the 2019 Impeachment Inquiry \u2013 words that were entirely candid and truthful (but uncomfortable for the Trump Administration) \u2013 Pompeo reneged on his promise,\u201d said the 21-page lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>A Pompeo spokesman called the lawsuit ludicrous and said Pompeo is confident the court would agree.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department, which is also a defendant in the lawsuit,\u00a0didn&#8217;t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2020\/02\/08\/USAT\/2ad284a6-e6a4-4aaf-ab64-c40c0371993a-XXX_Sondland_Trump_Impeachment_Hearings_JG_136.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>Gordon Sondland was removed from his position as ambassador to the European Union on Feb. 7, 2020. He testified during the first impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump.<meta itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\" content=\"Jack Gruber, USA TODAY\" \/>&nbsp;<span>(Photo: Jack Gruber, USA TODAY)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>During impeachment hearings, Sondland testified about Trump&#8217;s attempts to get Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate unsubstantiated corruption allegations against former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter who was involved with a Ukrainian gas company.<\/p>\n<p>The House impeached Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, but the Senate acquitted him.<\/p>\n<p>America Talks<\/p>\n<p>Sondland said in the lawsuit that he had to hire private attorneys on short notice for the intense examination by congressional committees. He testified for 17 hours before the House Foreign Affairs, Intelligence and Oversight and Reform Committees, the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n<p>Sondland testified that he assured Ukrainian officials  that a meeting would be arranged between Trump and Zelensky in exchange for investigations.
