The Defence Secretary told MPs yesterday measures will soon be brought forward to deliver a manifesto commitment to former Armed Forces personnel in Northern Ireland. He said it will give veterans “the protection they deserve, as part of a wider package to address legacy issues in Northern Ireland”.<\/p>\n
Mr Wallace said where veterans face allegations related to their duties, they will “receive full independent legal support and representation for as long as necessary at public expense”.<\/span><\/p>\n He added: “As a former Northern Ireland veteran myself, I know it is incredibly important that we recognise that many of those veterans served with distinction and bravery, and upheld the law to their highest ability.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n “It is deeply regrettable that we see many of them brought to trial – or under investigation – for vexatious reasons, and we are committed to make sure that does not happen.”<\/span><\/p>\n He spoke after a question from Tory MP Kate Griffiths. She said: “Legislating to tackle vexatious claims and put our brave Armed Forces personnel first was a manifesto commitment and landmark piece of legislation that I was proud to support.”<\/span><\/p>\n
