Minneapolis police on Tuesday responded to reports of shots fired near George Floyd Square , the intersection where Floyd died last year, as community members gathered to mark the anniversary of his death.<\/p>\n
A 911 caller reported a suspect’s vehicle left the area “at a high rate of speed” and an individual with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound was being treated at a local hospital, police said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“This is an evolving incident,” police spokesperson John Elder said in a statement. “No further information is available at this time.”<\/p>\n
Philip Crowther, an Associated Press journalist shooting video at the intersection, reported hearing as many as 30 gunshots about a block east of the intersection, and said a storefront window appeared to have been broken by a gunshot.<\/p>\n
\u201cVery quickly things got back to normal,\u201d Crowther said. \u201cPeople here who spend a significant amount of time, the organizers, were running around asking, \u2018Does anyone need a medic?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Crowther shared footage of the moment gunshots rang out in the square on Twitter.<\/p>\n

The intersection of 38th and Chicago in front of Cup Foods has been barricaded to traffic and preserved as a memorial to Floyd.\u00a0His death sparked months of protests worldwide against police brutality and systemic racism.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Last month, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of\u00a0second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter last month after kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes.<\/p>\n
The three other former officers accused of aiding and abetting Chauvin will\u00a0stand trial in March 2022.\u00a0All four men have also been\u00a0indicted by a federal grand jury\u00a0with violating Floyd’s civil rights\u00a0during his arrest.<\/p>\n
The intersection has been transformed into an outdoor festival for the \u201cRise and Remember George Floyd\u201d celebration, including a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. The event follows several days of marches and rallies across the country marking the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death.<\/p>\n
