The claim: An image shows a sign about adultery outside Crystal Methodist Church\u00a0in Effing, South Carolina<\/h2>\n

Two years after it first went viral, an\u00a0altered image of an unusual church\u00a0sign has resurfaced on social media.<\/p>\n

The image, posted June 24 on Facebook,\u00a0shows a purported sign\u00a0at Crystal Methodist Church in Effing, South Carolina.\u00a0The message: “Adultery is a sin. You can’t have your Kate and Edith too.”<\/p>\n

The image was shared more than 8,500 times before it was removed.\u00a0But it’s not real.<\/p>\n

Fact check:<\/strong> CNN did not lighten image of alleged Seattle shooter<\/span><\/p>\n

There is no record\u00a0of a “Crystal Methodist Church” in South Carolina. “Effing” doesn’t appear on the map, either. The image has been around since at least early\u00a02019, and other independent fact-checking organizations have debunked it.<\/p>\n

<\/strong>USA TODAY reached out to the Facebook user who posted the image for comment.<\/p>\n

Same image,\u00a0different message<\/h2>\n

The source of the image is a Facebook page that has repeatedly altered\u00a0the same photo to\u00a0share different messages.<\/p>\n

The earliest version of the image USA TODAY found online\u00a0was posted Feb. 9, 2019, by\u00a0the Facebook page “Crystal Methodist Church of Effing SC.” The image gained traction on Reddit, where it has received about 7,500 reactions since it was posted March 28, 2019.<\/p>\n

The phrasing of the sign’s message resembles the saying,\u00a0“You can’t have your cake and eat it, too.” The phrase also appears in a 1967\u00a0country song from The Statler Brothers called\u00a0“You Can’t Have Your Kate and Edith Too.”<\/p>\n

This is the latest in a long line of punny signs from the supposed\u00a0Crystal Methodist Church of Effing SC.<\/p>\n

In August 2018, an image of the same sign had a different message: “Kiki doesn’t love you but Jesus does.”\u00a0The image was posted a month after Canadian rapper Drake released the song “In My Feelings,”\u00a0in which he asks several women, including one named Kiki, if they love him.<\/p>\n

Snopes found dozens of different versions of the same sign. The lighting and surrounding setting\u00a0don’t change from image to image, indicating\u00a0they were altered with digital editing software.<\/p>\n

No evidence church, town exist<\/h2>\n

Beyond the image itself, there is no record of a “Crystal Methodist Church” in South Carolina, according to our research, which included\u00a0a directory from the\u00a0South Carolina Conference\u00a0of the United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n

The name, of course, is a play on the words crystal meth.<\/p>\n

USA TODAY also couldn’t find any evidence the town of Effing, S.C., exists.<\/p>\n

The only other reference to\u00a0the town’s existence is another Facebook page, a spoof\u00a0page that describes itself as the “unofficial community page for the town of Effing, South Carolina.” An image of\u00a0one of\u00a0its purported residents, identified in various posts as “Earl of Effing,” is a\u00a0stock photo.\u00a0The page reposts an array of viral images as if they originated from Effing.<\/p>\n

There is a town in South Carolina called Effingham.\u00a0But there are no records of a “Crystal Methodist Church” there.<\/p>\n

Our rating: Altered<\/h2>\n

An image that claims to show a sign outside a church in South Carolina is ALTERED, based on our research. There is no such municipality as Effing, S.C. The Crystal Methodist Church of Effing SC\u00a0Facebook page has repeatedly shared alterations of the same image of a sign with different messages.<\/p>\n
