New York (CNN Business)<\/cite>US stocks hit record highs Monday, surging 100% from the lows they hit at the start of the pandemic. Then Tuesday happened.<\/p>\n

A widely anticipated retail sales report showed the Delta variant is putting a damper on American consumer spending. That dragged the already lackluster market further into the red as the opening bell rang in New York.
\nThe S&P 500<\/span> (SPX<\/span>)<\/span>, the broadest gauge of Wall Street, was down 0.9% around midday. The Dow<\/span> (INDU<\/span>)<\/span> slid some 320 points, or 0.9%, and the Nasdaq Composite<\/span> (COMP<\/span>)<\/span> was down 1.2%.<\/p>\n
