Simplified rules for international talent were unveiled by the Home Secretary today as the latest addition to the Government’s points-based immigration system. A new fast-track International Sportsperson route will be introduced from next month in order to ensure professional athletes can work in the UK.

The visa will help to guarantee sporting events such as the football Premier League continue to be British exporting successes.

Rules for who can apply for the Government’s Global Talent Visa have also been expanded in order to attract the world’s most gifted to Britain.

Those who have won recognition such as the Booker Prize, the Oscars, BAFTAs and more will be able to speed-up their application process.

Ms Patel said: “We want to attract the world’s greatest minds at the crowning point of their careers, so the UK remains number one on the global leader board in sports, the arts, science, film and technology sectors.

“Through our points-based system we focus on talent and skills, not where someone comes from, and the immigration changes we’re make it much easier for the brightest and best to live and work in the UK.”

The new points-based system came into force at the start of the year when the EU’s freedom of movement ended.

Ministers now have far more control in determining who can receive a visa to live and work in the UK.

It also means nations from EU and other countries around the world will be treated equally.

While part of the bloc, rules allowed for any EU citizens to freely travel and live in the UK.

Now, all those looking to move to the UK must meet a specific set of requirements for which they will score points.

DON’T MISS:

Only those who receive a high enough score will be offered a visa.

The International Sportsperson route and extended Global Talent Visa route make it easier for those who may not pass requirements such as “speaks English at required level” to work in the UK.

During the 2016 referendum, there were claims made the voting to leave the EU would significantly harm the Premier League as many players would not be able to get visas to work in the UK.

Remainers said footballers from EU countries would be more likely to play for clubs ion the content as a result, damaging the UK’s brand as the home of football.

As today’s International Sportsperson route was unveiled, Immigration Minister Kevin Foster said the change in rules would make it “even easier” for athletes to work in Britain.

The minister said attracting new talent would help build on Boris Johnson’s commitment to “build back better” from the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “The UK is a proud home to some of the world’s most talented stars and the changes we’ve made will make it even easier for people at the top of their game to come and work in the UK.

“Our immigration rule changes put our words into action, delivering on the Government’s ambition to attract the brightest and best talent to the UK and ensure we build back better.”
