The girls say they were spurred to act after they learned in school about the harm that plastic does to wildlife and the environment.<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p>As of Wednesday, the petition had over 343,000 signatures, with a goal of 500,000.<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;We know our young guests really enjoy their King Jr. meals, and we are working on the development of more sustainable packaging and alternative toy solutions,&#8221; Burger King said in a statement. The company has pledged to have a more sustainable toy solution in place by next year.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald&#8217;s said in a statement, &#8220;In the UK over the next six months our Happy Meal promotions will include a mixture of board games, books and soft toys &#8212; which will see an almost 60% reduction in the number of hard plastic toys given away in comparison to the first half of the year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We like to go to eat at Burger King and McDonald&#8217;s, but children only play with the plastic toys they give us for a few minutes before they get thrown away and harm animals and pollute the sea,&#8221; the two wrote for the petition. &#8220;We want anything they give to us to be sustainable so we can protect the planet for us and for future generations.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"McDonald&amp;#39;s started using fresh meat. Here&amp;#39;s what happened to sales\" class=\"media__image\" src=\"\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/190621161517-mcdonalds-fresh-beef-quarter-pounder-restricted-large-169.jpg\"><br \/>\n&#8220;After we learned about the environment and pollution in school we wanted to do everything we could to help. We put a poster up in the window of our house about saving the planet and we try and recycle as much as we can. But we want to do more, which is why we started this petition.
