New York (CNN Business)<\/cite>The Dow and the broader US stock market fell sharply Monday as Chinese real estate conglomerate Evergrande’s debt crisis made American investors uneasy.<\/p>\n

Stocks plummeted at the opening bell. At midday, the S&P 500<\/span> (SPX<\/span>)<\/span>, the broadest measure of Wall Street, was down 2.2%, while the Dow<\/span> (INDU<\/span>)<\/span> fell more than 725 points, or 2.1%. The Nasdaq Composite<\/span> (COMP<\/span>)<\/span> traded a whopping 2.8% lower.
\nIt’s shaping up to be the worst day since May for the S&P and the Nasdaq. The Dow is on track for its worst day since July.<\/p>\n
