Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Sajid Javid sat down with Kay Burley on Sky News to discuss MP Chrisitan Wakeford’s move from the Conservative party to the Labour party. Mr Javid was grilled on how the move defection from Conservative to Labour made Prime Minister Boris Johnson look. It has been reported that Mr Wakeford has been in talks with Labour since last October. Mr Javid welcomed a by-election for those living in Bury South as many voted conservative with a majority of 402 votes ‘I think Christian would be happy with a by-election.’<\/p>\n
Ms Burley said: “Is this going to help or hinder the Prime Minister?”<\/p>\n
Mr Javid said: “Well I don’t see it that way.”<\/p>\n
Ms Burley said: “Well it’s one or the other.”<\/p>\n
Mr Javid said: “I was sad to see Christian go, it’s never good for any political party to see one of your own leave and defect in that way.<\/p>\n
JUST IN:‘Endless waffle!’ Peston viewers vent as Angela Rayner calls to ‘test the majority’<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Mr Javid added: “Of course, it’s not good news but it’s a decision for him.”<\/p>\n Ms Burley: “Do you think there will be a by-election?”<\/p>\n Mr Javid added: “But I feel sorry for the people of Bury South they voted Conservative.<\/p>\n “I think a by-election would be welcome.”<\/p>\n Ms Burley said: “Do you think there will be one?”<\/p>\n Mr Javid said: “Yeah I will be very happy, I think Christian would be happy with a by-election.<\/p>\n “I think he supported by-elections in these circumstances in the past.<\/p>\n “And I think given that the people of Bury South rightly voted Conservative in 2019, they wanted to get Brexit done.<\/p>\n “They want to see a strong economy and all of that, and now they’ve got an MP that’s changed his affiliation without their permission.<\/p>\n “Why not give them a say?”<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Other Tory MPs in Parliament could be heard loudly booing Christian Wakeford.<\/p>\n Mr Wakeford announced the move to Labour in the Bury Times, Mr Wakeford also sent a letter to the Prime Minister ahead of PMQs.<\/p>\n In a statement, Mr Wakeford said: “I care passionately about the people of Bury South and I have concluded that the policies of the Conservative Government that you lead are doing nothing to help the people of my constituency and indeed are only making the struggles they face on a daily basis worse.<\/p>\n “Britain needs a Government focused on tackling the cost of living crisis and providing a path out of the pandemic that protects living standards and defends the security of all.<\/p>\n “It needs a Government that upholds the highest standards of integrity and probity in public life and sadly both you and the Conservative Party as a whole have shown themselves incapable of offering the leadership and Government this country deserves.”<\/p>\nPMQs: Boris stammers after Scottish MP makes Plan B jibe<\/h3>\n
