ITV political chief Robert Peston has accused Labour of “banging on about partygate” amid continued uncertainty over Boris Johnson’s future. During his name-sake programme last night, Mr Peston confronted Emily Thornberry about whether the public would say Labour are banging on about ‘partygate’ too much. This comes as Boris Johnson has vowed to fight on as Prime Minister after facing a renewed push to resign over lockdown parties in Downing Street.

Mr Peston said: “Boris Johnson and some newspapers believe this is all going to blow over, that people are getting bored with party-gate.

“They say that there are more important issues out there – the cost of living and Ukraine.

“Do you think the public will say Labour are banging on about it too much?”

Ms Thornberry responded: “I think at the moment it isn’t Labour that’s banging on about this, it’s the public.”

They ask about taxes and National Insurance. That’s what they are interested in.”

DON’T MISS:

Boris Johnson LIVE: PM holds crisis meetings with rebels – ‘kill-zone’ [LIVE BLOG]

Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg also rallied to Mr Johnson’s side on Wednesday, saying he was “sure” Mr Johnson would “survive” the current furore.

This comes as MPs continue to wait to see the findings of civil servant Sue Gray’s inquiry into the events.

It is understood that Ms Gray’s report is completed, but she has not yet sent it to the Prime Minister.

Separately, the Metropolitan Police have launched an inquiry into potential Covid-law breaking in Downing Street.

Boris Johnson: Peter Bone slams Rory Stewart’s ‘liar’ claims
