Former Labour MP Dr Denis MacShane compared Sir John Redwood’s demands on living standards to be like that of Tony Benn and Jeremy Corbyn. The Tory MP called on Boris Johnson to scrap big taxes and do more on energy prices following an increase. Speaking to GB News, Sir John said: “We’re going to have this huge hit to living standards and growth this April.<\/p>\n
“Fuel prices through the roof, Council Tax up, National Insurance imposed.<\/p>\n
“He needs to scrap the big national taxes that he’s proposing to put on.<\/p>\n
“He needs to do more on energy prices, I think he needs to get rid of VAT on fuel at least for the timebeing.<\/p>\n
“He needs to promote more British fuel coming out of the North Sea in particular and we’ll then start to be on the road to prosperity again.”<\/p>\n

Dr Denis MacShane later added: “I was absolutely fascinated, John and I are about the same generation.<\/p>\n
“When he started talking about import substitution I thought, my God that’s Tony Benn langauge.<\/p>\n
“That’s Jeremy Corbyn language, that’s the old-fashioned protectionism.<\/p>\n
“I know we’ve shut our frontiers to Europe but are we really going to move in the direction of Albania?”<\/p>\n
It comes as the Government has been urged to end the “grossly unfair” regional differences in electricity and gas bills which leave homes over £100 worse off.<\/p>\n
Analysis by the Liberal Democrats shows households in north Wales and Merseyside face the highest costs, £126 more for the same amount than the North East, where people pay the least.<\/p>\n
Households in the South West pay almost £109 more while those in London pay £97.59 extra amid soaring energy bills, with Ofgem saying average charges will rise to £1,971 in April.<\/p>\n
The UK is broken up into 14 different pricing regions where it costs different amounts to get electricity and gas to people’s homes.<\/p>\n
