Cig\u0430rette sales increased during the pandemic for the first<\/span> time in 20 ye<\/span>ars, according to <\/span>a recent report by the Federal Trade Commission. Though the report does not specify a reason, the increase in sales may be at least partially driven by people who had previously quit sm\u043eking but started again t<\/span>o cope with str<\/span>ess, a pr<\/span>imary cause of re<\/span>lapses, during 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n To identify the percent change in tobacco sales every year since 2000, 24\/7 Wall St. reviewed the FTC\u2019s <\/span>Cig\u0430rette Report for 2020<\/span>. The report does not include sales of e-cig\u0430rettes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Americans purchased more cig\u0430rettes last year, though the uptick was small — only a 0.4% increase to 203.7 billion from 202.9 billion in 2019. Between the turn of the century and last year, sm\u043eking rates have significantly declined and are abou<\/span>t 66% lower than they w<\/span>ere just half a century ago, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The FTC\u2019s report also found that tobacco companies’ spending on advertising and promotions increased from $<\/span>7.62 billion in 2019 to $7.84<\/span> billion last year. Most of the advertising and promotion money was spent on price discounts paid to cig\u0430rette retailers in order to lower the price of cig\u0430rettes to customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Sm\u043eking is the leading cause of preventable death, according to the CDC.
