The next Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister has been urged to make Boris Johnson their deputy. One radio caller told Nick Ferrari on LBC that the outgoing PM is the “only one” who can tackle the cost of living crisis. Barry, from Chingford, said Mr Johnson should “stay” or be made “deputy prime minister”.

A poll published earlier this week found that if Mr Johnson’s name was added to the Conservative leadership ballot paper, he would be resoundingly re-elected as Prime Minister.

The survey from Opinium found that 68 percent of members would rather Mr Johnson than Mr Sunak taking over, while 63 percent would prefer him to Ms Truss.

Nick Ferrari admitted: “When I suggested he stay on at the Conservative hustings in Leeds, he got a far bigger cheer than Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss.”

Barry continued: “I would like to bring back Boris. He told a few lies, who cares! He has got to stay or be made deputy prime minister.”

JUST IN: ‘PAY to see your GP!’ Liz Truss wanted reform to NHS

Mr Ferrari responded: “People have been campaigning for him to go from the moment he crossed the threshold but now they are saying we need him back. It’s a bit ironic isn’t it?”

Barry said: “We really do need him. I can’t believe what is going on in this country.

This echoes Ben Houchen, the Mayor of Tees Valley, who told The Telegraph this week that Red Wall voters “will punish Tories for ousting Boris Johnson”.

He warned that Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak will face a brutal backlash from the grassroots voters regardless of who wins the race to be the next Prime Minister.

The powerful Conservative regional politicians said it was “blindingly obvious” that Ms Truss and Mr Sunak could not earn the same support as the outgoing Prime Minister.

Mr Houchen said: “We’ve seen that reflected in places like Teesside.

“Lots of first-time Conservative voters are completely bewildered, confused and actually quite upset that the Conservative Party got rid of Boris.

“I think we will ultimately be worse off at the general election for not having Boris Johnson.”

A report in the Sunday Mirror last weekend suggested that Mr Johnson and his allies were plotting a return to Number 10 before the next election if his successor “implodes”.

DON’T MISS:

New polling suggests nearly 50% of Tory members want Boris back as PM [POLL]

They suggested that the Tory MPs would welcome Mr Johnson’s return “as a winner” if Ms Truss, who looks set to win by a decisive margin, does not “get a grip” on looming crises.

A Conservative Party source said: “I think that could well intensify if things go badly for Liz – you get people thinking ‘Would he have been any worse?’

“She’s got strikes coming up, energy bills, inflation the whole lot.”

At the beginning of the leadership race, more than 10,000 Tory members are thought to have backed a “Boris ballot” campaign to added Mr Johnson as a candidate in the final round.

READ NEXT:

All the drama of Boris Johnson’s early days in Downing St Conservative voters would reinstate Boris Johnson shows poll
