{"id":131600,"date":"2023-03-07T11:05:10","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T11:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fin2me.com\/?p=131600"},"modified":"2023-03-07T11:05:10","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T11:05:10","slug":"house-republicans-eye-congressional-support-staff-as-next-oversight-target","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fin2me.com\/politics\/house-republicans-eye-congressional-support-staff-as-next-oversight-target\/","title":{"rendered":"House Republicans eye congressional support staff as next oversight target"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.axios.com\/qKqXiZyrCoHsUbD_kMdyKxq-zpA=\/0x0:1920x1080\/1920x1080\/2023\/02\/28\/1677544232650.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Illustration: Brendan Lynch\/Axios<\/p>\n<p>A little-noticed committee is offering a glimpse into the House GOP&#x27;s priorities for governing a post-pandemic America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>Republicans want to dislodge nonpartisan offices from the thumb of House leadership, two senior GOP aides told Axios.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee on House Administration&#x27;s stated mission is decentralizing power and depoliticizing Congress&#x27; support staff.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#x27;s laying the groundwork to investigate the officials and policies under which the chamber has operated since 2019.<\/li>\n<li>It&#x27;s specifically targeting offices dealing with security and health in the wake of Jan. 6 and during the height of COVID.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Driving the news:<\/strong> The committee, led by Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wisc.), is set to adopt its 9-page oversight plan on Tuesday morning. <\/p>\n<p>A copy of the plan, obtained by Axios, includes pledges to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conduct \u201cthorough oversight of the resources dedicated to post-January 6th security improvements\u201d and \u201cimplement plans that enhance the security of the Capitol campus.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Investigate the alleged \u201cpoliticization\u201d of the Capitol Police and transition the Sergeant-at-Arms to a more \u201ctraditional oversight entity.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cReview the Office of the Attending Physician\u2019s actions during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the issuing of inconsistent guidance between the House and the Senate.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Between the lines: <\/strong>The GOP aides said some ways House Democrats exercised control when they were in the majority included installation of metal detectors outside the House chamber after Jan. 6 and decisions over who got security details.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Last Congress, Republicans rebelled against the House\u2019s mask mandate and COVID restrictions and put out a competing Jan. 6 report focused on alleged Capitol Police leadership failures and proposed Capitol security improvements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Zoom in: <\/strong>Republicans have complained that members like former Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) \u2014 who was attacked at a 2022 campaign event \u2014weren&#x27;t given a security detail despite details for former Trump impeachment managers and Jan. 6 committee members.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Former Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) told Axios last year: \u201cZeldin almost gets stabbed \u2013 there should\u2019ve immediately been a Capitol Police detail going to New York to protect him.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Republicans also alleged partisan enforcement of metal detector fines, and Rep.
