Voters have had their say on the House of Commons\u2019 Privileges Committee investigation into whether former PM Boris Johnson misled parliament when denying lockdown parties in 10 Downing Street. GB News took to the street for Jacob Rees-Mogg\u2019s show, and the public didn\u2019t sound too impressed over the Westminster soap opera.<\/p>\n
One woman told the camera \u201cI think it\u2019s silly that it\u2019s still going on and I think we should just move on.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think people are just stressing over small things when I think a lot of people were partying, maybe there were some but I think a lot of people were trying to just make the most of their life.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t see anything wrong with having a cake in the office and I think it\u2019s stupid.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think people just want to blame the government for things, and they\u2019re seeing this as an opportunity to blame the government when really they should just move on.\u201d<\/p>\n
A man told Mr Rees-Mogg\u2019s \u201cVox populi, vox dei\u201d segment he used to think the issue was worth investigating but he\u2019s since changed his mind.<\/p>\n

A second woman lambasted Mrs Harman\u2019s investigation, calling the probe \u201cirrelevant\u201d.<\/p>\n

A fourth member of the public said it was important to \u201cfind out the truth about things, especially within politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
She added, \u201ceven though it might be trivial to some people it is important when it is people in power\u201d.<\/p>\n

The four members of the public had their say after an excoriating monologue from Boris\u2019s former top Cabinet Minister Jacob Rees-Mogg, who said the investigation into his former boss is leading to the \u201cAmericanisation of our political system\u201d.<\/p>\n
He told GB News viewers, \u201cI am worried about the Americanisation of our political system; in America as soon as a politician upsets any interest group there is legal action, there are impeachments\u2026 which assumes people don\u2019t act in good faith and undermines trust, poisons the well of politics\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe truth is most politicians of either persuasion act in good faith, even if they then make mistakes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not a legal question, it is a political question. The privileges committee is not even a proper legal set-up, it has a gossamer of constitutional propriety thrown over it, but it is in fact a political committee against Boris Johnson who had a mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Don’t miss…<\/strong> Mr Rees-Mogg also noted the 20-year anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, by the then-Blair government in which Harriet Harman served as Solicitor General.<\/p>\n He alleged that \u201cdodgy dossiers, bad information, fake news\u201d was produced to justify the invasion, and noted that Mr Blair was never subject to a Commons investigation of the sort investigating Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n He said the Blair government \u201cused information that was inaccurate to put its case across. It even had to get its legal advice updated to ensure it had the legal basis for doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s worth bearing in mind that the second most senior legal advisor to the Government at that time was the then-solicitor general Harriet Harman, who now low and behold presides over the Privileges Committee which is looking into something completely different.<\/p>\n Mr Rees-Mogg said Boris Johnson\u2019s defence dossier, submitted to the committee this lunchtime, includes \u201clots of information in it about what people thought at the time – which is what matters – because ministers talk to parliament in good faith, they say what they know at the time and what they are briefed about\u201d.<\/p>\n Despite submitting his defence to the Committee this lunchtime, Mrs Harman has yet to publish it, leading to allegations from Boris loyalists that it\u2019s a \u201cstitch-up\u201d, and her committee is buying \u201cmore time to move the goalposts again to get the result they\u2019re after\u201d.<\/p>\n
